The displaying of a Yellow Ribbon has long been a sign of loyalty to family, friends or loved ones away in the military, or to welcome them home.

Many think that the tradition came from the 1973 song by Tony Orlando and Dawn: “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree”, but it is actually from the 1949 John Wayne movie “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon”. The lead actress wore a yellow ribbon to show her love for a cavalry officer, whose uniform had a yellow stripe down the pants.

Ribbons: The yellow ribbon of support has now taken on many other looks and meanings. The causes range from teenage suicide, Canadian Cancer Society, 9/11 attacks to a Red Fridays Ribbon.

The Red Fridays Ribbon sports three red maple leafs. The Red Leafs represent “Faith”, “Hope” and “Charity”.
